Based on the emotional story of dreams, struggles, and separations faced by Nepali youths who leave for foreign employment, the film Riyal Ringgit is set to release on August 1 (Shrawan 16). Rebel Films announced the release date by unveiling the film’s poster on Friday.
Directed by Vibhor Pokhrel and produced by Gaganlal Pradhan, the film brings together a team of experienced creators. Pokhrel has directed thousands of music videos, while producer Pradhan has been active in music production for decades. The story is written by Pradeep Bhardwaj.
The title Riyal Ringgit is a blend of the currencies of Qatar and Saudi Arabia (“Riyal”) and Malaysia (“Ringgit”), where many Nepalis go for labor work. The poster reflects deep emotional intensity. Its tagline reads: “When the plane took off from Tribhuvan Airport, dreams and life took off with it.” Written by poet Nathan Ryan, the line encapsulates the film’s core message—hidden pain, exploitation, alienation, and sometimes even death—within a single sentence.
The top section of the poster features a woman’s face filled with pain, incomplete hope, and emptiness. The center displays characters from diverse backgrounds, symbolizing impoverished Nepali youths burdened with countless dreams.
In the background, skyscrapers hint at cities in Malaysia, Qatar, or the UAE, destinations where thousands of Nepalis arrive in pursuit of Riyals or Ringgits. The poster signals that the film will expose the harsh realities behind these dreams.
The film stars Pramod Chaulagain, Nita Dhungana, Chhulthim Dolma Gurung, Rabindra Khadka, Dhruva Koirala, Prem Subba, Ramchandra Adhikari, Rear Rai, Roshan Shrestha, Ishwari Baral, and Bimala Giri. It includes action direction by Roshan Shrestha, cinematography by Hari Ghale, editing by Bipin Mall, background score by Kiran Tuladhar, and choreography by Rajiv Samar.
Songs in Riyal Ringgit are composed by Ramchandra Kafle, Kiran Tuladhar, and Chandan Dhowaj KC, with vocals by Sugam Pokharel, Ketan Kshetri, Ramchandra Kafle, and Junu Rijal Kafle. Lyrics are penned by Amar Nyaupane, Pradeep Bhardwaj, and Chandan Dhowaj KC.
The film was shot in Rajasthan (India), and Chitwan, Kathmandu, and Letang (Nepal). It is being distributed by Kafia Films.
