Director Arjun Subedi, who previously directed Rangeli and whose upcoming film Soltini is soon to be released, has announced the production of his new project, Kanyadan. The film, centered on a socially sensitive theme, aims to portray the struggles faced by widowed women and the challenges imposed by society.
According to Subedi, the essence of the film lies in the message: “Every widow deserves a second chance.” The story will explore how widows, by challenging rigid social structures and traditional norms, can embrace a second ‘kanyadan,’ reclaiming their right to love and to live life anew.
The screenplay has been co-written by Kumar Bhattarai and Arjun Subedi. The film is targeted for release next year. Planet Three Films will be the lead production company, in collaboration with Subhaksha Pictures and Trident Concept.
The project team includes Regina Bista as presenter, Martin Oli as executive producer, Susan Prajapati as director of photography, Prashant Sibakoti as music composer, Sujan Khatriwada as project head, Royal Bhimsen as poster and publicity designer, and OSR Digital as the digital distributor.
Although films under the same title Kanyadan have been made in the past, Subedi’s version will present a completely new storyline. The announcement was accompanied by a concept-based poster, featuring a symbolic image of a woman—reflecting both the silent suffering of widows and their longing for a renewed life.
