Madhav Sharma, a rising name in the Nepali film industry as a screenplay writer, has written the screenplay and dialogues for the recently released and commercially as well as critically successful film ‘Hostel 3’, which highlights various aspects of college life. In this film, he is not only the writer but also the associate director.

The third installment of the ‘Hostel’ series, focused on college life, ‘Hostel 3’ was released to Nepali audiences worldwide on Falgun 23. The film, which is still running in Nepal and overseas, showcases not only the fun moments of college life but also the challenges students face.

Having previously worked as part of the writing team for films like ‘A Mero Hajur 4’ and ‘Upahaar’, Sharma mentioned that those experiences greatly helped him while writing ‘Hostel 3’. According to him, the films written in the past were also commercial films, written with the purpose of entertaining the audience, and this film was written with the same goal—to entertain the viewers. However, he added that there is always some underlying message in his films.

Regarding the importance of storytelling in the success of Nepali films, Sharma said, “The most important thing for making a film is the story. And the way the story is told is the biggest challenge. In Nepali cinema, the storytelling style itself is the biggest challenge. When the storytelling style is clear, and the audience understands it or relates to it, especially if it is contemporary, the audience feels more connected to it.”

Offering advice to new writers, Sharma emphasized the importance of studying, gaining practical knowledge, developing the habit of watching films, and keeping in mind one’s own language and culture. He believes that understanding what kind of films perform well in the current context, and writing with that in mind, can attract even more audience love.

While writing the screenplay for ‘Hostel 3’, he faced several challenges. “It was already a hit series. While writing, I had to ensure that the reputation of ‘Hostel’ and ‘Hostel Returns’ didn’t go down. Also, there were so many characters in this film, and it was necessary to establish each one and ensure a proper landing for them. That was very challenging,” he added. “If you watch the film, you’ll notice that it’s somewhat a suspense thriller. We also had to repeat certain scenes in a way that wouldn’t feel unnatural to the audience, which was extremely difficult. Figuring out how to make that natural through the screenplay was the biggest challenge.”

Directed by Sashan Kandel, ‘Hostel 3’ features talented new-generation actors like Paras Bam Thakuri, Rihan Giri, Ashish Ghimire, Padam Tamang, Simran Pant, Hena Nagarkoti, Sama Parajuli, Santosh Baniya, Umar Khan, Rohan Shrestha, and Ashish Purush. The film presents real-life college experiences to the audience.

The producers of the film are Suresh Kandel, Karn Karki, and Govinda Adhikari, while the co-producers are Shishir Gyawali, Anish Sigdel, Kundan Gupta, and Ganesh Magar. Shankar Koirala is the executive producer, and Kosis Raj Chhetri is the line producer.
