The teaser of the Nepali film Riyal Ringgit, which portrays the harsh realities of foreign employment, has been officially released. Scheduled to release on August 1 (Shrawan 16), the teaser was shared on Sunday by production company Rebel Films, leaving a deep emotional impact on viewers.
The teaser highlights the dreams, struggles, and painful separations experienced by Nepali youth forced to seek jobs abroad. It captures how unemployment in Nepal pushes youths to migrate overseas, the heartbreak of leaving family behind, and the exploitation and challenges they face in foreign lands. The teaser also shows how migrant workers often fall into the traps set by people with ill intentions. The film sheds light on the dark realities hidden beneath the shiny promise of foreign jobs.
Directed by Vibhor Pokharel, the film stars Pramod Chaulagain, Nita Dhungana, Chhulthim Dolma Gurung, Rabindra Khadka, Dhruva Koirala, Prem Subba, Ramchandra Adhikari, Rear Rai, Roshan Shrestha, Ishwori Baral, and Bimala Giri, among others. The story is penned by Pradeep Bhardwaj.
The title Riyal Ringgit combines the names of the currencies of Qatar/Saudi Arabia (Riyal) and Malaysia (Ringgit), symbolizing the primary destinations for Nepali migrant workers. A previously released poster carried the tagline: “When the plane took off from Tribhuvan Airport, dreams and life took off with it,” written by poet Nathan Ryan. This single sentence encapsulates the sorrow, alienation, and occasional tragedies that accompany the pursuit of foreign employment.
Produced by Gaganlal Pradhan, the film features action direction by Roshan Shrestha, cinematography by Hari Ghale, editing by Bipin Mall, background score by Kiran Tuladhar, and choreography by Rajiv Samar.
