Two of Nepal’s prominent literary figures and Madan Puraskar-winning authors, Amar Neupane and Bibek Ojha, have shared their thoughts after watching the recently released Nepali film ‘Mahabhoj’. Both praised the film’s subject matter, narrative presentation, and performances by the cast.
Neupane described ‘Mahabhoj’ as “a film that tells the story of our time.” He emphasized how the film effectively depicts the pressing issue of cooperative fraud currently prevalent in society. According to Neupane , “Many cooperatives have now become bankrupt. The sweat and savings of many have vanished. The victims are farmers, laborers, and working-class people, while the perpetrators are the wealthy and powerful.”
He further noted that the film skillfully connects the stories and struggles of rural individuals with the broader theme of cooperative scandals, with a fluid and engaging narrative. Neupane praised both the performances and the direction, expressing sorrow over the portrayal of a justice system where people must resort to force due to legal loopholes. He said, “This isn’t a flaw in the film, but in the legal system. Justice should have been delivered by the law, but it had to be delivered by the film instead.” He added that many viewers might find the story deeply personal.
Another Madan Puraskar winner, Bibek Ojha, remarked that every actor in ‘Mahabhoj’ delivered a powerful performance. He especially noted that many actors surpassed their previous roles in terms of depth and quality.
According to Ojha, this two-hour film delves intricately into themes of society, family, personal emotions, and psychology. While the central story revolves around a cooperative fraud scandal, it simultaneously explores family ties, community trust, and betrayal—elements that Ojha felt were masterfully woven together.
He commended the nuanced portrayal of the clash between social and legal structures, legal loopholes, and the loss of dignity and options people face when both social and legal systems fail them. Encouraging viewers to watch the film with their families, Ojha expressed confidence that ‘Mahabhoj’ will not disappoint.
Amar Neupane , a well-established figure in Nepali literature, received the Madan Puraskar in 2068 BS for his novel ‘Seto Dharati’. His works are known for their deep social awareness and human sensitivity. Similarly, Bibek Ojha, a renowned literary voice among the younger generation, won the Madan Puraskar in 2079 BS for his novel ‘Ainthan’, which focuses on contemporary issues and psychological themes.
The responses from these two award-winning authors confirm that ‘Mahabhoj’ successfully brings an important and timely issue in Nepali society to the screen. With strong performances and skilled direction, the film addresses cooperative fraud, human suffering, and the pursuit of justice. The authors’ praise has further elevated the film’s status, suggesting that for viewers, ‘Mahabhoj’ offers not just entertainment but a compelling reflection of social reality.
