The official trailer for the Nepali film Gunyo Cholo: The Dress has been released, shedding light on the emotional and societal challenges faced by a transwoman as she seeks to reveal her true identity.
The trailer captures the tension between a son who wishes to express his inner gender identity and a father determined to suppress it. From a young age, the boy is drawn to traditionally feminine clothing, but is pressured by his father to become a soldier. The trailer depicts how he eventually breaks free from this imposed path.
When he can no longer suppress his truth, he makes the decision to leave home. The trailer poignantly portrays the emotional toll of this decision, including the reactions from his parents, neighbors, relatives, and friends.
Lead actor Nazir Hussain is featured prominently in the trailer, alongside several other cast members.
Gunyo Cholo: The Dress is scheduled to release on Bhadra 13 (August 29, 2025). Directed by Samundra Bhatt, the film centers on the story of a gender minority—specifically, a transgender woman—and is being hailed as Nepal’s first fully trans-focused narrative.
Nazir Hussain plays the lead role of a transwoman, supported by performances from Sanchita Luitel, Sushil Sitoula, Rajkumar Ghosh, Shishir Rana, Anupam Shrestha, and Bishal Pahari.
The film has already garnered international attention, with U.S.-based Buffalo 8 acquiring global distribution rights.
Post-production was completed abroad using a Hollywood-standard workflow, including editing, color grading, sound design, mixing, and background music.
Renowned Hollywood singer Lisa Gerrard—known for her work on Gladiator 2—has lent her voice to the film. The background score has been composed by Marcello di Francisci.
Gunyo Cholo: The Dress is a co-production between Nepali and Hollywood-based production houses. The film is produced by Aakash Budhathoki and V-Bhanse Janubon, with Jeffrey J. Wain and Steve Johnston serving as executive producers. Anupam Shrestha is the associate producer.
Cinematography is by Alok Shukla, and the film features lyrics by Lekhu Sahayatri. Notably, the project was also selected for the prestigious Tasar Film Market in the U.S.
