The film “Janai Harayeko Manche: Sambandhaka Dhaga Haru” was initially titled “Janai Harayeko Bahun: Sambandhaka Dhaga Haru.” However, the filmmakers recently changed the title, replacing “Bahun” with “Manche” (man/person), after certain Hindu organizations and individuals expressed undue concern and pressure.
Director Himal Neupane clarified that the film is not religious in nature. According to him, the word Janai (sacred thread) appeared in the title due to its contextual relevance, but this led some to assume that the film carried a religious theme.
“Our film is not religious—it’s a social story. The word Janai came only in connection with the subject matter. Still, we didn’t want to get entangled in unnecessary controversy, so we chose to change the title,” said Neupane.
He further added that the team could have released the film under its original title if they had wished. “A creator has the right to work on any subject and title of their choosing, and no one can stop a filmmaker from doing so,” he emphasized. Neupane also urged the government to remain alert against attempts to interfere with creative freedom.
