The film “Gunyu Cholo: The Dress” has been released in theaters today. Having secured a satisfactory number of shows, the film is part of this week’s Friday release lineup. With Nazir Hussain’s performance being widely praised in the trailer and songs, the production team is confident that the audience will embrace the film.
Directed by Samundra Bhatt, Gunyu Cholo is based on the story of a transgender character from the gender minority community. Nazir Hussain plays the lead role, portraying a transgender woman.
Alongside Nazir, the film also features Sanchita Luitel, Sushil Sitoula, Rajkumar Ghosh, Shishir Rana, Anupam Shrestha, and Bishal Pahari in significant roles. As the first fully transgender-centered narrative in Nepal, the international distribution rights have been acquired by Buffalo 8, USA.
The entire post-production of the film was carried out abroad, including editing, color grading, mixing, sound design, and background score, all executed in Hollywood style. Hollywood artist Lisa Gerrard has lent her voice to the film, while the complete background score has been composed by Marcelo Di Francisci. Gerrard had also contributed vocals to Hollywood’s Gladiator II.
This project marks a joint collaboration between a Nepali production house and a Hollywood production house. The film has been produced with investments from Akash Budhathoki and V-Vanse Janubon, while Jeffrey J. Wen and Steve Johnston serve as executive producers, and Anupam Shrestha as associate producer.
Cinematography is by Alok Shukla, with lyrics penned by Lekhu Sahayatri. The film was also selected for screening at the prestigious Tasveer Film Market in the United States.
