The 30th edition of the world-renowned Busan International Film Festival in South Korea will feature the world premiere of Nepali short film “Rihana”. This year, “Rihana” is the only Nepali entry selected for the prestigious festival.
According to the festival’s official announcement, special screenings of the film will take place on September 21 and 22 (Asoj 5–6). Out of 3,059 submissions, “Rihana” was chosen among the top 10 films.
Producer Kedar Bhusal said the selection continues their mission of bringing Nepali stories to the global stage. He remarked, “We have been working to present diverse Nepali stories in different formats and share them worldwide. The selection of ‘Rihana’ at Busan has given me even greater encouragement and inspiration.”
The film is produced by A Dumsi Pictures Production, in collaboration with Miraj Motion Pictures, Underground Talkies, and Picture Frame. It is written and directed by Suraj Paudel, with lead roles played by Prithu Bhatt and Srijana Adhikari. The project is produced by Ujjal Bastakoti, Abinash Bikram Shah, and Kedar Bhusal, with Roshni Adhikari serving as executive producer.
The cinematography is by Shishir Bishankhe, editing by Gaurav Kumar Mullick, and casting direction by Madan Shrestha. Sound design and mixing are by Dikesh Khadgi Shahi, while Ramlal Khadka worked as the production designer. The screenplay was co-written by Shailesh RC (LSM).
The Busan International Film Festival is regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious festivals, known especially for spotlighting Asian cinema on the global stage. With its focus on new directors and innovative storytelling, it has often been called the “Cannes of Asia.”
Being selected for Busan is considered a major achievement for any filmmaker or country. The participation of “Rihana” is expected to further strengthen Nepal’s presence in the international film arena.
