The acclaimed Bangladeshi film No Dorai is set to hit theaters across Nepal from Bhadra 27 (September 12), according to a statement released by Apple Entertainment.
The film, which highlights themes of courage, freedom, and resilience, won six categories at the Bangladesh National Film Awards in 2019.
Directed by renowned filmmaker Tanim Rahman Aungshu, No Dorai (meaning Not Afraid) follows the inspiring real-life journey of Ayesha, a young woman from Cox’s Bazar. Her passion for surfing leads her to challenge deeply rooted social norms, symbolizing empowerment, perseverance, and a profound connection with the sea.
Celebrated for its powerful storytelling, stunning cinematography, and exploration of surfing culture and women’s empowerment in Bangladesh, the film has garnered critical acclaim.
“With its universal themes of courage and independence, No Dorai is expected to resonate deeply with Nepali audiences,” Apple Entertainment stated. “It will appeal to those who enjoy stories of adventure, equality, and personal triumph.”
Sunita Rana of Apple Entertainment further noted that partnerships have been established with Nepal’s leading cinema chains to ensure audiences across the country can experience Ayesha’s inspiring journey on the big screen.
Made in Bengali and Chittagonian languages, the film will be screened in Nepal with English subtitles. A Nepal premiere is scheduled for next Tuesday, with dignitaries including Nepal’s Foreign Minister and Secretary, Bangladesh’s Ambassador, Nepal’s Minister and Secretary for Communications and Information Technology, the SAARC Secretary General, the Chair of the Film Development Board, officials of the Bangladesh-Nepal Chamber of Commerce, and heads of various film organizations expected to attend.
The release comes under a bilateral film distribution agreement between Nepal’s Apple Entertainment and Bangladesh’s leading multiplex chain Star Cineplex. Under this partnership, Star Cineplex recently screened the Nepali film Keti Haraeko Suchana: Missing in Dhaka.
Apple Entertainment chief Nakim Uddin confirmed that the agreement falls under the framework of the South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA), which aims to promote trade and economic cooperation among South Asian countries by reducing tariffs and trade barriers. SAFTA has been in effect since 2006.
