Professionals from Nepal’s film cinematography sector have come together to form the Nepal Cinematographer Association. At a meeting held on Tuesday at the Film Development Board auditorium, Gaurishankar Dhunju was elected as the interim committee chairperson.
Rajesh Shrestha was appointed as vice-chairperson, Bishnu Kalpit as general secretary, Narendra Mainali as secretary, and Alok Shukla as treasurer. The committee members include Chintanraj Bhandari, Sitaram Shrestha, Umang Shahi, Niraj Paudel, and Nishal Paudel.
The meeting saw the participation of notable cinematographers including Gaurishankar Dhunju, Bishnu Kalpit, Narendra Mainali, Alok Shukla, Rajesh Shrestha, Gautam Shrestha, Bishal Paudel, Niraj Kandel, Umang Shahi, Krishna Shrestha, Babu Shrestha, Ramsharan Upreti, Shivram Shrestha, Shambhu Sapkota, Diche Gurung, Shivu Dhakal, Amar Maharjan, Bibek Khadka, Sarad Mahato, Navin Gurung, Luj Singh, Krishna Pariyar, and Robin Acharya.
The assembly concluded that although various professional associations exist in the Nepali film industry, cinematographers have lacked a unified voice. The new association aims to protect professional rights, foster skill development, and establish regulatory frameworks. Plans include registering the association with the District Administration Office and holding a general convention within six months to form a permanent executive committee.
