Lawsuit Filed in Mumbai Court Seeking Stay on Release of Film ‘O’ Romeo’

A legal case has been filed in a Mumbai civil court seeking to halt the release of the upcoming Bollywood film ‘O’ Romeo’. The film, which is scheduled for theatrical release on February 13, has landed in controversy over allegations that it is based on a real व्यक्ति’s life without proper authorization.

The petition has reportedly been filed by Sanobar Shaikh, the daughter of Hussain Ustara, who claims that the film unlawfully portrays her late father’s life. She has named the film’s producers, director, and writer in the suit, alleging that the storyline and promotional materials suggest a biographical link without the family’s consent.

According to the plea, the film’s teaser and related publicity allegedly describe the story as being inspired by true events, which Shaikh argues closely resemble her father’s life. She claims this could damage her family’s reputation and has requested the court to issue both interim and permanent injunctions to prevent the film’s release in theatres, on television, and on OTT platforms. A court hearing on the matter is expected soon.

The controversy intensified after the teaser’s release, where the central character was allegedly depicted in a manner similar to how Ustara has been portrayed in public narratives. Shaikh maintains that her father was not a criminal figure as shown, but rather someone who had cooperated with law enforcement, and that the film misrepresents those facts.

In response, the filmmakers have reportedly denied that ‘O’ Romeo’ is an official biopic. They argue that the story is a work of fiction inspired by literary material for which the necessary rights were obtained. The production team maintains that all creative elements have been used lawfully.

With legal proceedings now underway, the final decision of the court could significantly impact the film’s scheduled release, drawing widespread attention within the Indian film industry and among audiences.
