The shooting of the upcoming Nepali film Maya Bhanekai Yasto Hola, directed by actress Rekha Thapa, has officially begun in Kathmandu.

Filming started Monday at Royal Tulip National Park in Shivapuri, Kathmandu. The project was originally announced on Falgun 3 during Maha Shivaratri.

Rekha Thapa, who previously directed films such as Himmatwali and Malika, is returning to direction after nearly eight years. Unlike her earlier projects, she will not appear as an actress in the film and will focus solely on directing.

The film is being produced under the banner of Diya & Amu Films, marking a departure from Thapa’s usual production house Rekha Films.

The film features a mix of veteran and contemporary actors from the Nepali film industry. Madan Krishna Shrestha and Dil Shrestha, who is making a return to films after a long hiatus, play central roles.

Another highlight of the film is the presence of three former Miss Nepal titleholders: Shristi Shrestha, Namrata Shrestha, and Miss Nepal International Niti Shah, all of whom play key characters.

Earlier, the production team unveiled two posters during the film’s announcement. The posters portrayed emotional and romantic themes featuring the lead cast.

One poster showed Dil Shrestha alongside Shristi Shrestha, Namrata Shrestha, and Niti Shah dressed in red traditional attire, hinting at a romantic dynamic. Another poster depicted Dil Shrestha sitting beside an elderly character portrayed by Madan Krishna Shrestha, symbolizing themes of family responsibility and aging support.

The film also stars Laxmi Giri, Bishal Pahadi, Ravi Dangol ‘Beman’, Sangam Bhandari, Sujata Shrestha, and Binod Poudel.

Produced by Hari Narayan Shrestha and Maya Devi Shrestha, the film aims to explore social emotions through a heartfelt love story written by Dhruva Lamsal, who is also returning to film writing after nearly a decade.

According to production head CM Bhardwaj (Subedi), filming was initially scheduled to begin in the second week of Falgun but was delayed due to elections and other circumstances. The shoot is expected to continue for about one month in and around Kathmandu.

The film’s director of photography is Sudip Baral, with Anirudh Atreya serving as chief assistant director. Music is composed by Prashant Siwakoti, costume design by Sujeni Malla, and makeup by Priya Karki.

The production team plans to release the film nationwide during the Teej festival next year.
