Kathmandu: The 5th edition of the Nepal Rural Film Festival (NERUFF) will be held from Baisakh 15 to 17 in Chandranagar Rural Municipality of Sarlahi district. The festival, aimed at promoting Nepali rural storytelling-based cinema, is expanding to the Terai region this year.

Preparations are already underway following discussions between Chandranagar Rural Municipality Chair Rajkumar Mahato and organizer Celebrity Nepal Foundation Chair Raghunath Sapkota.

The festival, previously held successfully in hilly regions under the slogan “No one is a stranger in the Himalayas, Hills, and Terai,” is now expanding its reach to further strengthen its vision of “Cinema for all, everyone’s cinema.”

Focused on rural narratives, local culture, and community-based cinema, the festival continues its mission of bringing films to villages and connecting rural audiences with cinematic experiences.

More than 50 submissions, including feature films, short films, and multilingual productions, have been received. Selected films will be screened, and winners will be awarded in multiple categories.

All screenings, including documentaries and short films reflecting rural life, will be shown free of charge to local audiences. The official selection list will be announced next week.

According to coordinator Kamal Ekchai Magar, the festival aims to increase audience engagement in Nepali cinema, build a culture of regular film viewing, and promote rural stories at an international level.

Previously, NERUFF has been successfully held in Laprak (Gorkha), Bhakunde Besi (Kavre), Ramechhap, and Rasuwa. This year’s edition in Madhesh Province is expected to be particularly significant.

The festival is organized in collaboration with the Film Development Board and Chandranagar Rural Municipality.
