Surkhet — The Third Karnali International Film Festival 2083 is set to begin on April 24 (Baisakh 11), with the aim of promoting Karnali’s rich stories, culture, and tourism on a global platform.

The festival’s detailed program was unveiled during a press conference held at Hotel Namaste in Surkhet. Organized under the slogan “Explore Karnali, Experience Karnali” and the campaign “Nepali Films for Everyone,” the event seeks to position Karnali as a center for film tourism and creative production.

The official उद्घाटन will take place at Hotel Shubh in Birendranagar, accompanied by a “Film Tourism Dialogue” featuring representatives from the Film Development Board, Nepal Tourism Board, and various levels of government, alongside prominent filmmakers and artists.

On the second day, a special “Kupinde Film Tourism Event” will be held at Kupinde Lake in Salyan, one of the region’s key tourist attractions.

Festival director Chakra Bahadur Chand emphasized that despite Karnali’s vast potential, film and tourism activities have remained minimal. He expressed confidence that the festival will serve as a milestone in transforming the region, with a long-term vision to establish Karnali as an international shooting hub.

A major highlight of this year’s festival is a “Film Story Competition” aimed at uncovering hidden local narratives. The best story will receive a cash prize of NPR 100,000, with results to be announced soon.

The festival also aims to boost local employment, enhance economic activity, and raise awareness about climate change through cinema. Stakeholders and media representatives attending the event expressed optimism that the festival will contribute significantly to tourism promotion, economic growth, and technological advancement in Karnali.
