‘Why Daya’s ‘Mitjyu’ Took So Long to Hit the Screen’ Took 8 Year Long to Hit the Screen

The upcoming Nepali film Mitjyu, set to release on Jestha 8, is now in its final stage before hitting theaters. Rooted in the traditional concept of mit (a culturally significant bond similar to sworn friendship), the film reflects on a practice that is gradually disappearing from modern Nepali society. In recent years, even the word itself has become less commonly heard, making the film’s theme both nostalgic and socially relevant.

The idea for Mitjyu was first conceived nearly eight years ago by producer Janak Gharti Magar and director Anil Magar. From the beginning, they intended to cast actor Dayahang Rai in the lead role. Although Rai liked the story, scheduling conflicts prevented the project from moving forward at the time. During the interim, the team worked on another film, Gharjwai. Two years later, they revisited the script of Mitjyu and finally brought it to life.

This time, Dayahang Rai was able to commit, and the film features a strong ensemble cast including Saugat Malla, Teriya Magar, and Shishir Wangdel. The film’s songs have already gained significant popularity, especially “Gairaghare Saili,” which is currently trending among audiences. The cast and crew are actively engaged in promotional activities.

According to Dayahang Rai, Mitjyu is fundamentally a story about relationships—family ties, friendship, and professional life. The narrative follows three drivers operating along a route from a village to the city, portrayed by Rai, Malla, and Wangdel. The story explores their personal struggles, responsibilities, and emotional journeys.

Rai emphasized that teasers and trailers only reveal a fraction of the story, encouraging audiences to watch the full film to truly understand each character’s depth. Speaking about his acting approach, he said, “I focus more on the internal psychology of the character rather than external expressions. The role I play in Mitjyu is quite different from me, yet it is deeply connected to reality.”

On working with Saugat Malla, Rai noted that their dynamic in this film differs from their previous collaborations, as their characters have distinct motivations and paths. He also shared a positive experience working with newcomer Teriya Magar, stating that for an actor, the distinction between new and experienced performers is less important than the demands of the script.

Reflecting on the concept of mit, Rai mentioned that although he hasn’t personally formed such a bond, he is aware of its cultural significance. Traditionally, it was even used as a means to resolve conflicts. Today, he believes the idea can be interpreted in broader contexts, including political alliances and partnerships.

With its emotional depth, cultural relevance, and powerful performances, Mitjyu is expected to leave a strong impression on audiences.
