Kathmandu: Nepali filmmaker Sanjay Rai has officially announced his directorial debut with the upcoming film ‘Ekka Missi Badshah’. The project was unveiled during a special event in Kathmandu on Saturday, held to mark Rai’s birthday, where the production team also introduced the film’s initial cast and technical crew.
Based in the United Kingdom, Rai has long pursued filmmaking and direction as a passion. Ekka Missi Badshah marks his first feature film as a director after years of developing his craft.
Presented by Mohinidevi Rai, the film stars actress Samragyee RL Shah in the lead role as a character named Asha. The production team also released her first look, showcasing a bold new appearance for the actress.
Speaking at the launch event, Samragyee said she had been selective about new projects because she wanted a role that genuinely challenged her. She described her character in Ekka Missi Badshah as bold, fearless and unlike any role she has previously portrayed.
“I connected with the character immediately. After discussing the role with the director and reading the script, I knew this was a project I wanted to be part of,” she said.
The film carries the tagline, “Some win, some lose, some become kings,” reflecting its themes of ambition, success and personal growth. According to Rai, the story revolves around today’s younger generation, exploring friendship, romance, social media, family expectations and the unexpected turns of life.
Executive producer Sudipta described the film as a special milestone in her career, marking her first project in that role within the Nepali film industry.
The production team includes Elon Gurung as line producer and Supath Shrestha as project supervisor. Cinematography will be handled by Narendra Mainali, music production by Nikesh Karki and Roman Bajracharya, editing by Sunil Shivabhakti, and styling by Ashim Ranabhat. Principal photography is scheduled to begin in Falgun.
The filmmakers have also announced open auditions for two key male characters, Krish and Arjun, while additional cast members and production details will be revealed in the coming months.
