Kathmandu — Shivraj Karki, producer of the film Tel Visa released last year and a manpower entrepreneur, has been arrested by police. He was taken into custody from the Swayambhu area by the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office on Tuesday.
According to police, Karki has been arrested on charges of fraud and offenses related to foreign employment. Multiple complaints had been filed alleging that he collected money promising jobs abroad, including in the United States, but neither provided employment nor returned the money.
Following complaints filed about three months ago, the Foreign Employment Tribunal had issued an arrest warrant. He was reportedly living in hiding in India, where he had opened a restaurant.
Investigations suggest Karki collected between NPR 100,000 to 2,000,000 per person and allegedly defrauded around 200 to 250 individuals. More than 100 victims have already come forward, police said.
He had also previously faced a banking offense case, according to police sources.
Karki had been operating a consultancy named “P&M Innovative Services” in Chabahil, Kathmandu, from where he allegedly collected money under the pretext of sending people abroad. He is also a general member of the Film Producers Association and had produced the film Chi Musi Chi before Tel Visa.
Meanwhile, complaints were also filed against other individuals associated with Tel Visa. Director Shankar Ghimire and presenter/actress Richa Ghimire were also accused of fraud related to promises of foreign employment and collection of money.
