Kathmandu: With its theatrical release approaching on July 17 (Shrawan 1), the Nepali film ‘Gaunthali’ has emerged as one of the most talked-about releases of the season. Its trailer has climbed to No. 1 in YouTube’s Movie Trending category, surpassing 730,000 views within five days of release.
The trailer has generated strong audience interest by combining an emotionally driven story, a powerful social message, and compelling performances.
At the heart of the film is Gaunthali, played by Simran Khadka, a bright young woman from rural Nepal whose dream of pursuing education is shattered by child marriage and deep-rooted social traditions.
The trailer follows her journey from being an outstanding student encouraged by her teacher to becoming a victim of circumstances after marriage. Her determination to continue studying is met with resistance from her family and society, culminating in emotionally charged moments that highlight the barriers faced by women seeking education.
Actor Arun Chhetri has also attracted attention for portraying an unusually gentle and innocent character, suggesting a fresh and distinctive performance. Simran Khadka’s emotionally layered portrayal of Gaunthali has likewise received positive reactions from viewers.
Built around the message “Girls deserve education,” the film explores issues such as child marriage, gender inequality, social prejudice, and life in Nepal’s hill communities. The overwhelmingly positive response to the trailer has fueled expectations that the film could enjoy a strong opening at the box office.
The title also carries historical significance. More than two decades ago, Dr. Bhola Rijal produced a film with the same name, regarded as Nepal’s first musical feature. The new ‘Gaunthali’, directed by his son Dr. Kapil Rijal, presents an entirely new story for contemporary audiences.
Produced by Bhola Rijal Production and Suman Giri Production, the film stars Arun Chhetri, Simran Khadka, Madan Krishna Shrestha, Prakash Ghimire, Lunibha Tuladhar, Rabindra Jha, Ishwori Baral, Sanjog Rasaili, Sita Devi Timilsina, Laxminath Timilsina, and Rajendra Nepali. Child actors Anshu Oli and Prince Nepali also feature in the cast.
The story is written by Dr. Bhola Rijal, while the screenplay and dialogues are co-written by Dr. Kapil Rijal, Nischal Kunwar, Niraj Nepal, and Giriraj Ghimire.
