The Patan High Court has issued an interim order prohibiting the promotion and dissemination of the film Laaj Sharanam, which is nearing its release, on social media and other communication platforms.
On Tuesday, a joint bench of Justices Lal Bahadur Kunwar and Hemanta Rawal issued the order while hearing a petition filed by former minister Mohammad Aftab Alam.
Alam had filed the writ claiming that the film used a character whose facial features, attire, physique, hairstyle, expressions, and speech resembled his without his consent, and he requested the court to halt its release.
He filed the writ against the Film Development Board.
The order states:
“Since the petitioner’s constitutional and legal rights have been violated, the Central Film Review Committee has the authority under Section 8(3) of the prevailing Act to withhold permission for the film’s release. Therefore, before further proceedings, an interim order is issued under Rule 42(3) of the High Court Rules, 2073, instructing the respondents not to promote, publicize, or disseminate advertisements or related posts of the proposed film Laaj Sharanam, which features a character identical to the petitioner’s facial features and appearance, on social media or other public communication platforms. The respondents should be informed of this order.”
This order has created uncertainty regarding the scheduled release of Laaj Sharanam, produced by JPT Creation, on Falgun 14 (February 26).
