The parallel edition of the ongoing third Nepal International Theatre Festival (NITFest), which began in Kathmandu on Wednesday, is set to start in Pokhara today. Initiated by NITFest, the Pokhara International Theatre Festival will be held at Gandharva Theatre, Gairapatan, and will continue until March 26 (Chaitra 13).

The festival will be officially inaugurated at 1 PM by Pokhara Metropolitan City Mayor Dhanraj Acharya. Organized by Pokhara Theatre, the festival will feature six plays from five countries, including Nepal, China, Japan, Tunisia, and Norway. In addition to theatre performances, the festival will also include cultural showcases, parades, workshops, and interactive events, as informed by Festival Director Parivartan. NITFest and Pokhara Theatre have been collaborating since the festival’s first edition.

Some of the foreign plays showcased at NITFest Kathmandu will also be staged at the Pokhara International Theatre Festival. Director Parivartan explained, “After NITFest proposed this idea, we initiated the festival in Pokhara. The NITFest organizers in Kathmandu coordinated bringing foreign plays to Pokhara, and we added a few local Nepali plays on our own.”

Speaking about the parallel theatre festival in Pokhara, NITFest Festival Coordinator Kedar Shrestha said, “Since the first edition, NITFest has been collaborating with theatre artists outside Kathmandu to host parallel festivals. Though we couldn’t continue this in the second edition, we have resumed it in the third edition.”

This year, NITFest is also collaborating with local organizers in Chitwan and Belbari, expanding the festival to three cities simultaneously.
