The much-anticipated Nepali film Unko Sweater, set for a worldwide release on Baisakh 26, has unveiled its song titled Kafle. The song was launched during a special event held at Big Movies in Kathmandu on Tuesday. Offering a realistic flavor of the film, the song features lyrics by Yubaraj Kafle, music by Jhuma Limbu, and vocals by Jhuma Limbu and Sujan Chapagain.
During the launch event, film director Nabin Chauhan stated that ‘Kafle’ is not just a title but a reflection of society. “The dream we carried when we went to Panchthar is finally about to come true. Since the film is made with a realistic approach, we’ve tried to present this song in the same realistic style,” said Chauhan. According to him, actor Bipin Karki plays the role of Dharanidhar Kafle in the film. For this role, the team studied the culture and lifestyle of people with the Kafle surname.
Director Chauhan also highlighted the difference between music videos and filmmaking. “The day I decided to make a film, I was faced with a huge question,” he added. “This is not a two-hour music video — it’s a full-fledged film, and I’ve worked tirelessly to make audiences feel that.”
Lyricist Yubaraj Kafle shared that his long-standing dream of turning his surname into a brand through a song has come true. “Back in school, teachers used to call me ‘Kafle, Kafle’ — it used to annoy me. That’s when I decided I’d make the Kafle name a brand. I’m happy to have started this journey with the Artmandu team and to finally see my dream coming true,” he said.
Composer and singer Jhuma Limbu shared that Kafle is tied to memories of her childhood. “I find my childhood in this song. While exploring the concept, I discovered that I was born and raised in the Kafle village — a serendipitous realization,” she said. Actively involved in the study of Mundhum culture, Limbu has enriched the song with profound cultural depth.
Singer Sujan Chapagain described the song’s structure as being like Woonko Sweater itself — woven from threads of many colors. At the event, both Jhuma Limbu and Sujan Chapagain delivered a live performance of the song.
Lead actor Bipin Karki said working on the film was an enjoyable experience. “The concept of writing in ‘autos’ (taxis or local transport) reminds me of my own past. Back in school, I used to fill in autos for many friends,” he recalled. “Many of my real-life experiences are reflected in the film.”
Actress Miruna Magar said the song holds an emotional connection for her. “There’s something personal about this melody — it echoes the songs sung by my ancestors. Getting to work on a song like this feels close to home,” she said, adding that she felt like she was being woven into a sweater during the making of the film.
Actor Wilson Bikram Rai described his time working on Unko Sweater as his “lucky time,” while fellow actor Alex Pars expressed gratitude to the Artmandu team.
Produced by Artmandu Pvt. Ltd., Unko Sweater is the company’s first feature film and presents a socially driven narrative in a realistic style. Starring Bipin Karki and Miruna Magar in lead roles, the film also features Wilson Bikram Rai, Alex Paras, Pariksha Limbu, Sunil Pokharel, Mao Tse Gurung, Prem Subba, Suraj Tamu, and Bhawana Khapangi Magar, among others.
While Sujan Chapagain directed the song, the film was written and directed by Nabin Chauhan, with Suraj Katuwal as co-writer. According to Chauhan, the film seeks to weave together cultural diversity, social contradictions, and the vivid colors of Nepali society into a single thread.
A promotional video introducing the Artmandu team was also presented during the song launch event.
