Nepali film Mahabhoj, which released this Friday, is receiving extraordinary and powerful word-of-mouth responses from viewers. Audiences exiting the cinema halls have been visibly pleased, and their positive feedback is expected to contribute to the film’s box office success.
Viewers have called Mahabhoj a “must-watch” film, praising its deep portrayal of sensitive social realities like cooperative fraud and human emotions. Many in the audience expressed their appreciation with applause at the end of the show.
One viewer shared that the film made him both emotional and angry: “While watching the film, I felt both emotional and enraged. It presented the reality of our society so beautifully that it touched my heart.” Another said it wasn’t just entertainment, but also an education and a movement. Critics have praised the screenplay, direction, and performances.
On Monday evening in Kathmandu, several prominent figures from the Nepali film, literary, and social sectors watched Mahabhoj. Attendees included veteran actors Hari Bansha Acharya, Saroj Khanal, Jitu Nepal, Aayushman Deshraj Joshi, Pariksha Limbu, director Tulsi Ghimire, Navin Chauhan, Pradip Bhattarai, author Amar Neupane, Vivek Ojha, political analyst Mumaram Khanal, sociologist Nirmala Dhakal, among others. After watching the film, they expressed high praise for the film’s themes and presentation.
Author Amar Neupane remarked that the film raises important questions about the failure of the legal system. “Despite our long struggle to build a constitution and legal framework, even in 2082 B.S., the victims of cooperative fraud have not received justice. Perpetrators are still able to hide evidence. After such massive political changes, should force be used when the law fails? That is the question raised by this film,” he said.
Veteran actor Hari Bansha Acharya noted how the film accurately portrays the misuse of public funds. “It clearly shows how leaders at the highest levels have misappropriated citizens’ money,” he said. Actor Saroj Khanal highlighted the core message: “The film’s biggest message is that not only those who shoot a bullet are murderers — those who push others to die are even greater murderers. There are many such people in our country, and this film challenges them.”
Actor Jitu Nepal praised the film for its touching and realistic themes: “The subject matter is both powerful and moving. The way it has portrayed cooperative fraud is highly realistic, and the film is very enjoyable as well.” Actress Pariksha Limbu remarked that the film shows how poor leadership can negatively impact an entire society. “I felt it was very real. It demonstrates how the actions of a bad leader can bring serious problems to the whole community.”
Director Navin Chauhan described Mahabhoj as director Dinesh Raut’s best film to date. “Among all of Dinesh Raut’s works, I found Mahabhoj to be his finest,” he said.
Directed by Dinesh Raut and written by Bikash Subedi, Mahabhoj is a joint presentation of Clock Work Creations and Picture Frame. Produced by Himal Kadariya, the film features performances by Aryan Sigdel, Dayahang Rai, Khagendra Lamichhane, Anjana Baraili, Malika Mahat, Gaumaya Gurung, Buddhi Tamang, Binod Neupane, Kamal Mani Nepal, Mohan Niraula, Basundhara Bhusal, and Sushma Pant, among others.
