Ahead of its release on May 14, Ek Muththi Badal director Sahara Sharma says the film is a reflection on women’s identity, suppressed desires, and emotional struggles within society.
Speaking about the meaning behind the title, Sharma said history has often assigned women great responsibilities while simultaneously confining them to limited spaces.
“Women were made to carry half the sky, yet their share remained small enough to fit within a fist. ‘Ek Muththi Badal’ is both a protest against that reality and a mourning of it,” she explained.
Responding to whether the film is progressive or merely a repetition of social problems, Sharma described it as a deeply progressive cinema. She explained that the “cloud” in the title works as a metaphor throughout the story.
“A cloud has no fixed shape. Everyone sees their own meaning in it — sometimes rain, sometimes shade, sometimes a sign of a storm. Society has viewed women the same way: as mothers, goddesses, lovers, or symbols of sacrifice. But the woman herself — her own identity, desires, and anger — has often disappeared,” she said.
According to Sharma, the film attempts to look beyond the traditional definitions imposed on women by society. As the release date approaches, the film has started drawing attention for its strong thematic voice and symbolic storytelling.
