Kathmandu: Nepal’s Film Development Board (FDB) celebrated its 26th anniversary with a series of events featuring awards, book launches, digital initiatives and policy announcements aimed at strengthening the country’s film industry.

The ceremony, held at the board’s auditorium in Kathmandu, was attended by Minister for Information and Communication Dr. Bikram Timilsina as the chief guest and Ministry Secretary Laxmi Kumari Basnet as the special guest. The event was chaired by FDB Chairman Dinesh D.C.

Welcoming participants, Member Secretary Rajesh Kumar Thapa said the board remains focused on institutional development, film archiving, digital transformation, support for creative projects and recognition of film professionals.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Timilsina said the government is committed to supporting Nepal’s film industry and urged the Film Development Board to play a more effective leadership role. He also stressed the importance of incorporating feedback from filmmakers into the country’s upcoming film laws and policies.

One of the event’s major highlights was the launch of the full version of the ‘Cinepa’ mobile application, designed to provide information, digital archives, promotion and easier access to Nepal’s film industry.

The board also launched two publications: “Shabdachitrama Chalchitra Boardko Gatividhi,” documenting its annual activities, and the “Cinepa” book, aimed at preserving institutional memory and supporting research on Nepali cinema.

During the ceremony, two board employees were honored, while the film project “Surilo Rukh” received a production grant of NPR 400,000 after being selected through the board’s Story Board program.

The Film Development Board also released a list of 31 Nepali films that have earned more than NPR 70 million at the domestic box office since the board’s establishment. The list includes major commercial successes such as “Purnabahadurko Sarangi,” “Kabaddi 4,” “12 Gaun,” “Jari,” the “Chhakka Panja” franchise, “Mahajatra,” “Prem Geet 3,” “Pujar Sarki,” and “Mahapurush.” According to the board, the list is intended to document the commercial growth of Nepal’s film industry.

Certificates were presented to members of the National Film Awards jury, while several previously pending honors from the National Film Awards 2082 were also distributed.

Special recognition was given to film professionals who successfully summited Mount Everest before the age of 25. Those honored included Nisha Adhikari, Arjun Karki, Kabita Nepali, Rojita Buddhacharya and makeup artist Nilam Poudel.

The event also featured awards for winners of the short film and documentary competition, reflecting the board’s continued support for original storytelling and diverse voices.

Identity cards under the Distinguished, Special, and Film Professional categories were distributed to veteran and active contributors to the Nepali film industry.

Prior to the anniversary celebration, the board organized a tree plantation program at Mrigasthali and a blood donation campaign, highlighting its commitment to environmental conservation and social responsibility.

Closing the event, Chairman Dinesh D.C. reaffirmed the board’s commitment to digital transformation, institutional strengthening, film preservation, recognition of industry professionals and support for innovative filmmaking.
