Kathmandu – The recently released Nepali film “Roll No. 1” received overwhelming praise from celebrities, filmmakers, comedians and public figures during a special screening held in Kathmandu on Monday. Many attendees described the film as a must-watch not only for students but, more importantly, for parents.
Produced under the Seven Seas Cinema banner, the film has been running in theaters across Nepal since last Friday. The special screening was attended by veteran filmmaker Tulsi Ghimire, actors Jitu Nepal, Kamal Mani Nepal, Marichman Shrestha “Balchhi Dhurbe,” Anjana Baraili, Nita Dhungana, Sanchita Luitel, Garima Sharma, Panchami Ghimire, Lunima Tuladhar, Harihar Adhikari and several other notable personalities.
Actor Jitu Nepal praised the film for challenging the conventional belief that classroom grades alone determine a child’s future. He said the movie effectively highlights the importance of linking education with practical skills and personal interests.
Popular comedian and actor Marichman Shrestha “Balchhi Dhurbe” described the film as “a book everyone should read rather than just a movie to watch.” He said the portrayal of educational struggles in remote areas and a father’s sacrifices for his child’s future left a lasting impact on him.
Actress Lunima Tuladhar emphasized that every parent should watch the film, as it encourages families to understand and nurture their children’s interests instead of forcing them into predefined academic paths.
Actress Sanchita Luitel also praised the film’s writing and presentation, saying it delivers a powerful message that real education goes beyond textbooks and includes skills, creativity and personal development.
Actor Harihar Adhikari called the film “beautiful,” adding that its portrayal of family relationships, academic pressure and childhood struggles reminded him of his own school days. Actress Nita Dhungana noted that the film realistically depicts the psychological pressure often placed on children in the name of education.
The overall message shared by attendees was clear: academic grades alone do not define success. Understanding a child’s interests, talents and aspirations is equally important. Many described the film as a meaningful social commentary on Nepal’s education system and parenting culture.
Directed by John Yonjan, “Roll No. 1” stars Mukun Bhusal, Sushank Mainali, Renu Nath Yogi, Evan Raj Upreti and Sirjana Adhikari in lead roles. Child actors Nirvik Regmi, Rinchen Lama, Sanyam Katuwal and Sijal Shrestha also play significant roles.
The film is produced by Binod Poudel and Janvi Poudel, with Chhatramaya Giri and Ramesh Chaulagain serving as co-producers. Written by Mahesh Dawadi and shot by cinematographer Shivaram Shrestha, “Roll No. 1” is currently screening in theaters across Nepal.
