‘Gaunthali’ Wins Praise at Premiere, Audience Applauds Its Powerful Portrayal of Nepali Society

Kathmandu: Director Dr. Kapil Rijal’s upcoming film “Gaunthali” received an overwhelmingly positive response at its premiere screening on Monday, with audiences and film personalities praising its storytelling, performances, and realistic depiction of Nepali society.

The premiere, held at QFX Cinemas in Civil Mall, drew widespread appreciation from viewers, who described the film as an honest reflection of rural Nepal before the 2060s (B.S.). Many said the story effectively portrays the hardships and social realities experienced by women during that period.

Viewers particularly commended the film for sensitively exploring the complex relationship between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law, highlighting how intentional and unintentional family behavior can shape lives and relationships.

Despite its runtime of approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes, audiences said the film remained engaging throughout, crediting its emotional depth, pacing, and compelling narrative for keeping them invested until the end.

Artists, filmmakers, and guests attending the premiere also praised writer-director Dr. Kapil Rijal for bringing an important chapter of Nepal’s social history to contemporary audiences with authenticity and emotional impact.

The performances of Arun Chhetri, who portrays a character with autism, and Simran Khadka, who plays a daughter-in-law, emerged as major highlights of the premiere, earning widespread acclaim from viewers.

Among those present were actors Krishna Malla, Rabi Dangol, Jitu Nepal, director Dibakar Bhattarai, producer Rohit Adhikari, journalist Prakash Subedi, and several other prominent personalities from Nepal’s film industry. Many expressed confidence that the film would resonate strongly with audiences upon its theatrical release.

Presented by Bhola Rijal Production and Suman Giri Production, Gaunthali is scheduled for nationwide release on Shrawan 1.

The film features Arun Chhetri, Simran Khadka, Madan Krishna Shrestha, Prakash Ghimire, Lunibha Tuladhar, Rabindra Jha, Ishwori Baral, Sanjog Rasaily, Sita Devi Timilsina, Laxminath Timilsina, and Rajendra Nepali, with child actors Anshu Oli and Prince Nepali also appearing in key roles.

The film is executive produced by Sarala Rijal, while Suman Giri and Dr. Kapil Rijal serve as producers. Indu Giri, Manish Rijal, Pralaya Rijal, and Jeevan Oli are co-producers.

Based on a story by Dr. Bhola Rijal, the screenplay and dialogues were jointly written by Dr. Kapil Rijal, Nischal Kunwar, Niraj Nepal, and Giriraj Ghimire. The film features cinematography by Hari Humagain, editing by Milan Shrestha, while Giriraj Ghimire also serves as the chief assistant director.
